Message from Neighborhood Association Chairman

清原元輔Welcome to the Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho Neighborhood Association Website.
Although in a central location of Tokyo, Minami Azabu is surrounded by lush greenery and in ancient times, there were samurai residences, many temples and shrines, fields of flowers and the Kougai River.
On the hilly slopes of northwestern Fujimi-cho, there was a palatial home called “Fujimi Goten” owned by the Tokugawa shogun family and from which the majestic Mt. Fuji could be seen. An elder residing in this area once told me that in his childhood he fondly recalled that there were waterwheels over a pure, clear stream and people who used to raise cows here only 100 years ago. It wasn’t that long ago that the Shin-Fujimi hill still had a good view of a snowcapped Mt. Fuji on sunny winter days.
Embassies from all over the world have been established in the area and the number of people from abroad living in Minami Azabu has been increasing. In our immediate neighborhood, we find the French embassy, the Pakistani embassy, the New Sanno Hotel designed for U.S. military travelers, a branch of the Chinese embassy and a European Union facility. In neighboring areas, there’s the German embassy, Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park, a quiet upscale residential area with many international components, and so on.
The Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho Neighborhood Association has always embraced many changes and moved with the times. We have mounted an effort to develop our town to be more comfortable and safe in order to meet the requirements of the day, preserving tradition while at the same time making necessary changes. When the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred in 1923, Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho experienced relatively little damage since the ground in this area was very solid, according to an elderly resident couple who experienced the disaster firsthand. Our raison d’etre as a responsible neighborhood association has been further deepened by more recent disasters in Japan, such as the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
A special home for the elderly, Arisu-no-Mori, opened in our neighborhood and welfare services for the elderly have been further improved and expanded with support from Minato City. Now, the city government is planning to build a public facility for young people and a welfare center next to Arisu-no-Mori. For our part, we will do our best to promote a strong “community tie” between the power of our young people and the knowledge and experiences of our senior citizens. We will also be enhancing the foreign language pages of this website in order to share news of neighborhood festivals and other events for the benefit of our foreign residents.
All board members on the Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho Neighborhood Association, as well as the Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho Disaster Prevention Group, will continue to work hard to promote safety, security and comfort for all neighborhood residents.
Thank you very much for your continued support and cooperation.
Motosuke Kiyohara
Chairman
Minami Azabu Fujimi-cho Neighborhood Association
